3rd Places, Fabrication

TolTerra is a site-specific sculptural installation whose overall form radiates outward to simulate the undulations of a water droplet. The individual pieces, made from both opaque and transparent materials, mimic a tree canopy providing its inhabitants an experience similar to being in nature. The sculpture uses parametric design, in which specific parameters are set based on space requirements, material constraint, and design intent. This approach to the design allows our team to be directly involved in the fabrication process and maintain a high level of control over the outcome. As the pieces transition from sparse members at the ceiling, allowing natural light to filter freely through the piece, into a dense arrangement on the wall, the visual stimuli are compounded.  The repetitive texture offers the visual captivation to invite a slower, more contemplative, speed of thought. Light filtration and the natural material palette introduce components of biophilia which either consciously or subconsciously add to a person's overall wellbeing.
